The Gabriel Method for Weight-loss. Review (Part One)

Series of Articles reviewing this well promoted weight-loss book.

The Gabriel Method is a book which is worth looking at closely. Mr Jon Gabriel has gone to great trouble in creating a feasible method of losing weight, and so I have decided to take a peek for my readers. The style of writing is not compelling, but is quite readable. To begin, Jon sets down the principle that your body has an inbuilt urge to “be safe”.  So, if your body feels safe by being overweight, then you have little chance of losing your excess weight in the long term.
He gives his own example, that he was fearful of his business partner and unconsciously gained more and more weight as a safety barrier against attack. According to him, he became grossly obese as a result. Once your body “realises”  that being thin is safe, then you can make long-term strides in your weight loss. At first I was slightly skeptical of this idea, but when I found it resonated with some of the overweight people I talked to, my opinion swung around. I would suggest that “in the wild” a human would be far safer being slim than being fat, and so it follows being overweight is also a sign of “affluence”.
So what happens when you are over-weight and go “on a diet”? Jon believes your body rebels because it no longer feels safe. And so you usually begin a yo-yo diet. You lose and you gain weight. You are in conflict with your body’s wish to be safe. This can lead to nutritional starvation, when suddenly you pig out on “bad” food. Then lack of essential nutrients, ingestion of toxins, lowering of immune system and emotional instability become apparent.  I suppose this is commonsense, but often the person who is struggling with weight-loss understands it well enough, but is unable to change their habits. This is their dilemma.

(Next Time: Part 2: Mental causes of being overweight).

Best wishes
