New Study: How weight-loss affects sleep apnea

In my reading I find many interesting studies which emphasise the benefits of being a healthy weight.
Here is yet another reason for weight -loss if you are overweight.
Sleep apnea is a disorder in which breathing is frequently interrupted during sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation sleep apnea can be life threatening.
It can cause oxygen levels in your blood to decrease – leading to hypertension, heart disease, and possibly mood and memory problems. It also increases the risk of road accidents.

One relatively small study showed obese people with sleep apnea, who lost 10% of their weight usually improved their condition.

A recent large-scale study with findings recently reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine showed the following results – comparing an intense lifestyle intervention group with a group who were simply given information about managing their diabetes (control group).

• In one year the intervention group lost an average of 24 pounds or about 10% of their starting weight. The other group lost about 1 pound.

• The sleep apnea improved in the weight-loss group and worsened in the control group.

• The greatest benefit of weight-loss was found in males with severe sleep apnea and who lost the most weight.

• 14% of the people in the intervention group had complete remission of the disorder.
If you are overweight, the evidence continues to mount where weight-loss shows benefit to your health.

Sincerely
