When I was much younger, with no real worries about weight-loss, I used to visit the pub for a few beers with mates on a Friday nights. My walk home would burn off any of the calories consumed from the beer – or so I believed.
How misguided was I?
You, dear reader, are highly knowledgeable about weight-loss so you would know that beer, or any other alcoholic drink is packed with calories. In fact it takes a walk of about 30 minutes to burn off the calories when you drink a glass of beer.
Ah the naivety of of youth!
What applies to alcohol also applies to food in terms of weight-loss.
Imagine if you park your car 200 yards from your favorite coffee and cake shop, do you cancel out the calories in your chocolate chip muffins and cafe latte, simply by walking from your car and back?
I think you know the answer to that question – the walk is not nearly enough to burn off the calories consumed. You will gain weight not lose weight.
Did you say “More’s the pity” ?
Sorry but, in almost any wrestle between Freda Food and Eddy Exercise, Freda always wins, mostly by three falls to zero!
The only time Eddy has a chance for weight-loss success is when they are head-to-head in elite sports, such as the Tour de France, the ardous three week long cycling race over tortuous terrain. In this race it’s essential for the cyclists to consume enormous amounts of high calorie food, to match the energy they expend riding for several hours in the saddle for days on end. Surprisingly, even under those conditions Freda Food nearly always manages to break even with Eddy Exercise.
So, if you arein a weight-loss program, what do you conclude from this?
It is this!
You cannot out-walk, out-run, or out-exercise your body’s ability to take in even more food (that is calories) than you lose. And every time you eat more food than you can “burn off” with exercise, your body will convert the calories into fat. No matter how much you exercise, you will always out-eat your “blood, sweat and tears”, whether it be jogging, or in the gym.
Exercise is vital to healthy living, and to your weight-loss program, but Freda Food will trounce Eddy Exercise every time unless you over-eat with non-fattening foods, beginning with vegetables plus lots of water.
What do we learn from this?
It’s possible to exercise until you drop, but still not achieve any weight-loss! When in doubt, count the calories.
